THREE cultures will meet in Camperdown this morning when a group of self-confessed Russian Robert Burns' fanatics travel to the town to inspect an internationally-significant statue of the Scottish bard.
Nine students, three teachers and two parents from School 606 Pushkin in St Petersburg are keen to see the world's oldest surviving statue of Burns which is on temporary display in the Corangamite Shire foyer awaiting restoration.
Aged between 13 and 16, the students are currently visiting Princes Hill Secondary College in North Carlton as part of an exchange program. School 606 Pushkin has a close connection with Burns, whose work is entrenched in their curriculum.
They will be joined by seven members of the Robert Burns Club of Melbourne, which has funded a bus to bring the students to Camperdown for the day. Among the club members travelling with the students will be the club's patron George McNaughton.
The students are looking forward to seeing the statue, which was badly damaged during a vandalism attack two years ago, and performing recitations of Burns' work at a public gathering.
Dr John Menzies of Camperdown will play the bagpipes for the visit while the shire's chief executive officer Andrew Mason will officially welcome the group.
Passionate researcher and Burns historian Gordon Ashley, who discovered the statue's significance, will provide an overview of the statue's history.
Subject to weather, the event will take place on the grassed area immediately outside council's main reception area with the guests then enjoying lunch and a visit to the botanic gardens where the statue was first erected 125 years ago.
